Time in France 2016-2021, Introduction (Part I)
The project in France began well before the actual move, as I traveled with Maija Korpivaara (later known as Jaaja) to explore potential locations for a horse breeding facility across various parts of France and Germany.
France quickly became the chosen destination, as land prices there were significantly more affordable than in Germany—or especially in the Netherlands.
In future articles, I'll share more about these trips, during which we searched for a suitable farm. We viewed a variety of properties for sale, including one in Calvados with 1,200 apple trees. The agent assured us with great confidence that it would make an excellent pasture for horses.
Eventually, Jaaja purchased an old dairy farm in the village of Volesvres in Burgundy, about 140 kilometers north of Lyon. I personally find the area absolutely stunning: the soil is perfect for grazing, and the landscape already hints at the proximity of the Alps—gently rolling terrain without being too mountainous. The farm was located near the village of Charolles, the original home of the famous Charolais cattle breed, known for its exceptional meat quality video link. The region is also well known for its wines—Chardonnay and Beaujolais vineyards are just a 30-minute drive from Volesvres.
The move took place in May 2016, and I'll return in future writings to share more detailed insights into the various phases of this demanding project.
In the articles about France, I'll be sharing both the good and the challenging experiences from that period. The landscapes were beautiful, and the culinary details delighted the senses—but at times, even the simplest tasks required remarkable patience and self-control.
I won't be publishing the articles in chronological order; instead, they'll offer glimpses into different moments from the years 2016 to 2021. Below the text, you'll find a gallery with a few photos from the farm and its surrounding area.
Welcome to the adventure!
